Five thoughts from opening night at Foodie Fest

1. You know those stories about people who know the right times to go to Disneyland? The people who never have to wait in lines and have the run of the park? I was those people! Wednesday’s opening night at Foodie Fest was a glorious romp from food truck to food truck. In fact, only one station had a long line, and it wasn't the (overrated) White Castle booth. LA’s Jogasaki Sushi Burrito had them packed tighter than a proper spider roll.

2. Local caterer Twisted Taco should bottle and sell its aguas frescas. The normally sweet, one-note Mexican juice drinks were livened up by interesting combinations. Watermelon Jamaica was light and tasty while tamarindo pineapple was one I'd be happy to drink on any late night taco run.

3. The best thing I ate by a long shot was from local chef Mike Minor and his Truck U Barbeque. The burnt ends and fries burrito features smoked burnt ends, habanero molasses barbecue sauce, coleslaw, Monterey Jack cheese, duck fat fries and Oaxacan barbecue aioli. This was not just the best of the fest, but one of the best things I've tasted all year.

4. Dessert was won by LA’s Frach's Fried Ice Cream. You have four choices—original (American), Mexican, Thai and Japanese. Each has different sauces, ice cream flavors and coatings. I went with Japanese and chose home-made green tea ice cream, pineapple sauce and panko-coconut coating. On second thought, dessert was won by me.

5. The new Foodie Fest location at the Linq’s parking lot offers a nice backdrop, but I imagine parking will be very difficult this weekend. Factor in the lines and I'm glad I had my Disneyland dream night.
