Let’s hear it for fourth place!

Earlier this week travel website TripAdvisor.com released the results of its Travelers’ Choice Awards for the “Best Destinations” in the U.S. and internationally—and Las Vegas took the third runner-up spot in the domestic category.

New York City again topped the annual list, which has been released for the past six years and is based on “reviews and opinions” from TripAdvisor users around the world. Las Vegas also maintained its place from last year’s survey. Rounding out the Top 5 are No. 2 Chicago and No. 3 San Francisco, which switched places this year, and No. 5 New Orleans, which shot up the list this year from No. 10. New York City and San Francisco also made the list for top world destinations, the only American cities to do so.

The announcement follows January’s naming of the Top Hotels in the country, a list of 25 that included the Vegas' own Mandarin Oriental. The CityCenter resort just missed the Top 10, claiming the No. 11 spot among hotels like Charleston’s French Quarter Inn (No. 2), the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii (No. 9) and Milwaukee’s Iron Horse Hotel (No. 19). The Grand Del Mar in San Diego took top honors in the annual survey, which the website first released in 2003. Find the full list of U.S. destinations and hotels below.

And while the our city's fourth-place finish isn’t so glamorous, Las Vegas did recently snag the top spot on one of TripAdvisor’s lists, as it was named “The Most Expensive U.S. City For Room Service.” The website’s TripIndex survey uses a “cost-comparison of common incidental items and services that many travelers will encounter when staying in a hotel” as guidelines, and found that Las Vegas’ average in-room amenities bill to be $68—just a few orange juices and bagels more than Denver’s $41 average tab.
